Paper Description
The aim of this paper is to cover pure mathematics in preparation for first year university mathematics courses.
Paper Structure
Approximately three quarters (3/4) of the course comprises the calculus topics of differentiation, integration, and differential equations. Other topics to be studied are: basic algebra, functions, and co-ordinate geometry.
Calculus is part of a larger community called STEM which stands for ‘Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.’ All students enrolled for the calculus paper automatically belong to the Pathways STEM Academy community and can expect to be involved in meetings, presentations, study groups and other mathematics-related activities or tasks.

This paper is internally assessed. There is no examination. It is extremely essential that you do all assessment components.

The internal assessment/exam ratio (as stated in the University Calendar) is 100:0. There is no final exam.

Workload
Students will attend four hours of classes per week. Averaged over the semester, they should spend another six hours or more per week on exercises, assignments, and revising for tests.
Linkages to Other Papers
Course content and learning outcomes are related to research in Mathematics Education currently being undertaken by a Pathways College Senior tutor. Pathways College mathematics teachers\tutors also attend and contribute to the mathematics and statistics education research seminars in the university.
